Current Facilities and Services

UBC Parking & Access Control Services oversees the operation of 9,268 parking spaces on the campus, a decline from 14,000 in 1980, as new buildings have replaced surface lots.

In addition to operating and maintaining UBC parking lots and facilities, Parking & Access Control Services also provides a wide range of other related services including:

  • Issuance of parking permits and passes
  • Meter parking
  • Access Control to university buildings
  • Ticketing and towing of illegally parked cars
  • Operation of a small compound for towed vehicles

Traffic Patterns

Campus traffic studies have identified the following patterns:

  • As of 2003, the average daily two-way vehicle traffic is approximately 59,810 vehicles, a 9% reduction from the previous year. The decrease may be attributed to: a 20% decrease in the amount of parking spaces available on campus, an increase in the amount of individuals selecting alternate forms of transportation to single-occupant vehicles, and the induction of the U-Pass.
  • Morning arrivals are sharply peaked, with an excess of 5,105 vehicles arriving in one half-hour period from 8:00am to 8:30am, while afternoon departures are more evenly spread out. The cumulative increase in vehicles on campus peaks at over 10,000 vehicles between 11:00am and noon.
